Dune Laila

Pressing the play button on Spotify to “Hair-ties & Lighters,” one feels as if they are simultaneously skipping and chewing bubble gum. Or maybe we’re floating on the clouds with Dune Laila. Either way, the trilingual artist cleverly combines French, Spanish, and English lyrics, and twirls listeners through harmonic melodies that keep you thumbing the “repeat” button on Spotify as the song ends. This is universally appealing music.

Her talent is evident in her first two singles, “Hair-ties & Lighters” and “Him”. The soulful, powerful, and relatable compositions are masterfully woven, and each delicate decibel rings through the headphones of a captivated listener.

The Franco-American grew up in the south of France before moving to Port Orford at the age of ten. Port Orford, a small town near the Southern Oregon Coast, gave her the opportunity to connect with her community on a more intimate level. She’s now known in her town as a local celebrity.

At the age of twelve, Dune Laila began to learn the guitar, and it quickly became evident that her passion for music was more than just a phase. Her innate gifts allowed her to convey profound emotions and experiences to audiences with an unwavering sense of authenticity.

Dune is part of a wave of resurgence in the Portland music scene in the post-pandemic era. “We took things for granted before the pandemic. I’m feeling this summer is going to be a really good one. I just feel it.” It seems that many artists Scrape Zine has interviewed agree.

As she continues to explore the music scene in Portland, Dune Laila is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Her unique blend of different languages and cultures, soulful melodies, and lyrics have made her one of the rising stars in the Portland music scene. Dune Laila is undoubtedly the soulful singer to keep tabs on the upcoming summer months.
